How Culture Affects Art
The world has been going through a lot lately and it's been impacting how many see art. During my research I saw many articles that would be perfect to describe how art has been changing lately based on what's happening throughout the world. Corona-virus, politics, and the black lives matter movement has been changing art for the better and will definitely leave a long lasting effect. I decided to focus my research on the impacts of corona-virus on the arts, and to my surprise there were so many effects that I have been oblivious to. Museums, theaters, and productions all closed while the pandemic caused havoc on the world. One thing I found particularly interesting was a form of art I've never really paid attention to before. This new form of art that I rediscovered is street art, I've always known about it, but never really seemed to care. While reading about street art my interest was piqued unlike when I see art in museums, for some reason art and me just don't click, but I finally found a style that I enjoy. One article I found interesting was written by Nadja Sayej and she states “Whether it’s with villainous cartoon-like germs, soldiers armed with Purell or even just a friendly reminder to wash your hands, creatives have found a collective coping strategy for dealing with Covid-19.”. These murals that artists are painting show many different aspects on how covid is affecting our society. Another site I stumbled upon was called Coronavirus murals: inside the world of pandemic-inspired street art written by Tyson Mitman. On this site it showed a variety of different forms of street art with explanations on what the art meant. Funny, political, and thankful are the three main themes that artists seem to use when displaying art for many to see and enjoy. This modern attempt for artists to reach out and share their artwork while many places were closed has inspired many and will continue to inspire other artists for years to come. Overall with all the bad that corona-virus has brought into this year, it also brought a positive aspect. Ongoing world events affect art more than I originally thought, and with all the current situations going on it is bringing a little light to unfortunate situations. My research that I did showed me a new aspect of art that I never really thought about before that I actually enjoy. In the end I learned that art can be used in many different ways and can represent many different situations.

I love this piece! My mom is a nurse so I have been enjoying seeing all the recent works of arts coming out which give grace to our healthcare and essential workers during this time! Ever since moving to Boston and frequently visiting NYC the past few years, I have always enjoyed the street art because I do not see much of it in my hometown. It is really beautiful and adds personality to the canvas its put on.
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate to this post! One reason being that Art and I don't have a very strong relationship either when they are put up in museums. I guess I don't understand why a blue canvas with a white line down the middle can sell for millions. But I can also relate heavily on the street art portion. Walking around Boston and other towns, street art was all over the place, but I really didn't seem to care. It was more of a "wow how did they even get up there" mindset then actually admiring the work. But after the pandemic struck, all of the art about the nurses and first responders popped out of nowhere, and I definitely started to notice and admire.
ReplyDeleteI really like what you've written here, and you make an excellent point about street art. For something that is all over the place, it's incredible how little I pay attention to it. I will definitely pay more attention to it in the future. I would be curious to find out if street art has increased since the pandemic started, if artists sought to find another way to share their ideas in these difficult times.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Nora! I have not thought about the impact COVID-19 has had on the arts. All of these art institutions such as theaters shutting down is sad to think about, and hopefully they will be able to reopen soon. Like you, I never get very excited when I go to art museums. After this writing assignment I too have been paying closer attention to street art. I appreciated the choice of your photo example because my oldest sister works in health care.
ReplyDeleteI love art especially if it has a deep meaning to it. Art has always been a way that we humans express ourselves through the means of communication, since ancient times. So I think the reason why you notice so much art now Nora, could be because people have spoken in the past and people aren't being heard but they are exhausted from shouting and screaming. So with art, the arstist should be able to communicate on a deeper level with the observer in order to fully understood the message being sent, because that message will always be there like a traffic like.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely an amazing post, I liked the way you introduced the present of the world's situation, where you clarify the main topics we are facing and showing a big impact in the art. People will never forget this situations, where the pandemic for example, changed the situation of many people, and how now we can mention the real superheroes, those that fought the most to combat and saved lives during the pandemic.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading what you wrote Nora! Your points are very insightful and it seems like you put in a lot of effort on the research. The mural looks beautiful and I’m sure it reaches a lot of people. I totally agree with what you said on what art can be. After all art is probably the most versatile application of human capabilities.
